full-time career opportunity available
in the Southern San Joaquin Valley, CA area. We ar
e looking for a talented professional to fill
the position of Scientist II

Field Development Representative reporting to the
Regional
Manager Field Development West. As a Scientist II

Field Development Representative you
will, with limited direct supervision from the Regi
onal Manager, plan; manage; and conduct
both internal and external research trials to obtai
n data defining the biological activity of
experimental compounds, which have been identified
as candidates for new product
development.
The incumbent will also conduct Technical Service p
rotocols to define and demonstrate the
value of Bayer CropScience products in comparison t
o competitors, and provide product
benefit training to technical service as new produc
ts approach registration and serve as a
mentor for Field Development Specialists and Scient
ists I. The FD Scientist II also represents
Bayer CropScience locally at Universities and other
research organizations. The Field
Development Scientist II acts as a resource for Bay
er CropScience management within the
U.S. and is frequently involved with the evaluation
and improvement of the Field development
processes and positions.
The Incumbent Will Be Responsible for:

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT:
o Primarily responsibility for the appropriate
design and timely completion of all biological
performance studies for compounds in the field deve
lopment phase of new product discovery
and development;
o New product development is primarily focused
on advanced stage products, but
significant involvement in early stage testing is e
xpected. Must also collect, summarize, and
present data with local and Sales District impact;

TECHNOLOGY EXCHANGE:

o Support Technical Service by providing train
ing on products in the registration phase and
helping with product efficacy and benefit demonstra
tions for the sales force and their
customers;
o Serve as the local Bayer CropScience contact
for University research staff in the
assigned territory and establish a working partners
hip with them;
o Make presentations to internal and external
customers for product training and at
scientific meetings to promote and create interest
in Bayer CropScience technology;

SALES SUPPORT:
o Both direct and indirect support of sales is
provided, with indirect support being most
frequent;
o Serve as an alternative technical source for
Sales reps and customers to assist the sales
efforts.

INFLUENCER/CUSTOMER ACTIVITIES:
o Network with peers, Technical Service, Regio
nal management, and Product
Development management to identify new business opp
ortunities; explore means to
capitalize on these opportunities, and to optimize
Bayer CropScience resource;
o Represent Bayer CropScience in local, Region
al, and National professional societies and
local commodity groups. Serve as a District and
Regional expert in incumbent

s area of
educational and graduate research activity.
o Position protocols and negotiate GIA with in
fluencers with some assistance.
o Assist with special emphasis seminars. Main
tain direct interface with key customer and
University resource personnel to keep updated on ch
anging technology and/or pest problems;
o Serve as a Bayer CropScience Ambassador to i
mprove and maintain the Bayer/industry
public image.

SAFETY:
o Responsible for field safety in handling and
storage of pesticides and equipment used to
conduct field trials;
o Operate vehicle in safe manner. Assists in s
afety training on pesticide use to territory
Sales personnel.

TEAM BASED ACTIVITIES:
o Cooperate with Product Development and Techn
ical Service to conduct biological trials
in areas or crops not readily available at other lo
cations;
o Identify new opportunities and plan strategi
es with Tech Service and Sales on a
district/regional level to capitalize on new busine
ss opportunities for important uses within the
Field Development territory;
o Provide, as needed, support to regional fiel
d technology stations to minimize the impact
of periodic work overloads. Work closely with fiel
d technology station scientists substituting
for them in the event of an emergency;
o Hire, train, and supervise interns with mini
mal supervision.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH:
o Maintain an active status in appropriate pro
fessional societies and industry groups and
prepare and deliver technical presentations at meet
ings

Qualifications sought

Previous industry experience in managing a Field territory is required for a Field Development Scientist II. Three consecutive years of high level performance (at or above expectations) as a Field Development Scientist I or equivalent position is preferred. Evidence of proficiency and innovation at the previous position must be evident in addition to experience. At the MS level, he/she should have a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in the evaluation of crop production technologies. At the PhD level, a minimum of 2 years relevant industry experience is required. Functional knowledge of all key and most secondary crops and pests within the territory is essential. A working knowledge in three of the four market segments is required. The incumbent serves as district/regional specialist for important product development activities and uses within the Field Development Region. Incumbent must be a proven resource for innovation, trial design, and conduct of field trials, with regional/national familiarity with crop/pest biology and management principals in the area of his/her specialty. Advanced communication and human relations skills are necessary to perform the duties of the position, influence decision makers and project a positive Bayer CropScience technical image. Advanced analytical and creative skills are needed to identify and take advantage of new business opportunities within the territory. Knowledge of the relative importance to Bayer sales efforts of crops in the territory is required to facilitate effective priority setting. Problems encountered are varied and include influencing sometimes uncooperative researchers, extension workers, regulatory officials, and customers of Bayer CropScience. Customer problems with product performance require technical knowledge of crops/pests/products within the Field Development territory. The workload requires advanced organizational, prioritization, and planning skills. Likewise, advanced interpersonal skills are required for effective interaction with key influencers. Reactive and proactive problem solving involves collaboration, but minimal direction, with the Regional Manager, Product Development Managers, Technical Service Representatives, Sales Representatives, Registrations, and external customers. Since the rep usually works alone, the ability to analyze and resolve difficult situations or problems is essential. When faced with a problem, the incumbent must be able to make decisions or recommendations based on experience and knowledge of the business and territory. Problem solving contributions should have local, regional, and national impact. Peers and other Bayer CropScience personnel recognize individuals in this position as one to seek for advice in problem solving. The incumbent must be capable of operating experimental and commercial spray equipment and hold a current commercial pesticide applicators license valid in the assigned work area, and have enough expertise to edit protocols submitted by Product Development Managers. In addition, the FD Scientist II must be able to create and summarize protocols with Regional impact. A good to excellent working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is essential.
